- Marks the first deployment of large-scale wireless LAN in the nation

LG-Nortel, a joint venture between LG Electronics and Nortel, announced on April 20 that its local partner Texcell-Netcom has successfully deployed LG-Nortel’s Wireless Mesh Network for Keimyung University’s Seongseo Campus.

While demands for WLAN are growing rapidly mainly from educational and public organizations, it marks the nation’s first deployment of large-scale public wireless LAN solution to be deployed for making Internet available anywhere across the entire campus. Korea’s Seowon University, a private university located in Chongju-city, last year deployed LG-Nortel’s Wireless Mesh Network technology for outdoor use, but its scale of deployment is smaller, in comparison with Keimyung University.

LG-Nortel’s Wireless Mesh Network deployed for outdoor wireless LAN service for Seongseo Campus, Keimyung University, fully supports wireless connectivity between users and APs (access points) as well as between APs. More than 20 outdoor APs and gateways have been installed for covering the campus area measuring approximately 500,000 pyong (equal to 3.3 square meters).

The deployment allows the university students and faculty to access portal sites and on-line educational and administrative information systems and other useful information wirelessly anywhere within the entire campus, indoor and outdoor.

“Since the establishment of the wireless LAN, it has been easy to find students who use their notebook to access Internet here and there in the campus,” said an official at Keimyung University. “This not only improves the conveniences for students and faculty but gives an enhanced impression of our university to visitors.”

“LG-Nortel’s Wireless Mesh Solution is ideal for outdoor public places because its deployment requires a simpler plan and reduced time compared with existing WLANs,” said Kim Young-ho, head of domestic enterprise sales division, LG-Nortel. “Our deployment of mesh network solution for Keimyung University is expected to serve as an important momentum for wide-spreading public WLAN in local market.”

The Wireless Mesh Network solution is a WLAN solution designed to allow PDA or notebook users to access ultra high-speed Internet within a certain coverage area of an AP. Unlike other WLAN solutions, the Mesh solution features wireless connection between APs. While the wireless transmission distance of an AP is 50 to 200 meters for existing WLAN, LG-Nortel’s mesh network can support up to 1 km of wireless transmission.

The outdoor AP is based on a special hardware design with the operating temperature ranging from -40℃ to 50℃ and provides a protection against water, snow, insects and dust. The conventional security problem with gateways has also been solved by fully encrypting data during wireless transmission.
